Among the many events, one that simply can’t be missed is the Palio delle Contrade.
In Garda, the town that gives its name to the Lake that is just a few minutes from us, 15 August marks the Palio delle Contrade, the competition between the nine districts of Garda that takes place out on the waters of the lake. The teams challenge each other aboard their Bisse, the traditional Garda boats, rowing in the standing position that is typical of Garda. Out of all of the Ferragosto events, this rowing race is the most exciting of all.
Celebrations for the Palio begin on 11 August, with regattas for women and children, historical reenactments in costume, gastronomic events, and a grand finale of fireworks. Here is the program:
11 August. Palio dei Piccoli: rowing race for children under the age of 14 with Garda-style rowing.
From 12 to 15 August. Palio in Osteria: restaurants in the city center offer tastings and dishes based on fish from the lake.
13 August. Palio in Rosa: races for women’s teams with Garda-style rowing.
14 August. Bandizione del Palio: historical re-enactments in costume through the streets of the city center.
15 August. 53rd Palio delle Contrade: rowing race between the Contradas of Garda with Garda-style rowing. Grand finale with fireworks.
